Remote Database access from your IBM iSeries (AS/400)

Whitepaper - RDB Connect’s data integration will help increase productivity.RDB Connect provides your IBM iSeries (AS/400) full SQL access to remote databases from all IBM i high-level languages. Easily access all your databases from an RPG program! The technology used in our DBU database utility / file editor is now available for programmers to integrate into their applications and tie in remote data to their systems.

RDB Connect is a collection of commands and functions allowing record level access to remote data using RPG, COBOL or CL!  Currently RDB Connect allows remote data access to MySQL, Microsoft SQL Server, Oracle, Postgre, Access, DB2 and more.

RDB Connect can be configured to access any database of your choosing. To confgure a custom database you need:

  • JDBC driver for the database (it must be in a directory on the IFS).
  • Database type
  • JAR description
  • JAR location
  • Class name
  • Connection string.

RDB Connect will run on an IBM iSeries (AS/400) with an operating system version of V5R4M0 and above.  It requires an IP connection to the remote server that is running the database to access.

Full SQL access to remote databases from an RPG program (or any language)

  • Quickly share data across platforms
  • Use RDB Connect APIs (Application Program Interface) to execute SQL queries for access to remote data
  • Allows any SQL query to be run
  • Import & Export the remote data, to and from the IBM iSeries (AS/400)
  • Communicate with remote databases directly from RPG, COBOL, or CL programs
  • Can be used in batch or interactive programs

RDB Connect is an IBM iSeries (AS/400) stand alone product that offers a procedural API for using SQL queries to access remote data. A programmer can write applications that use standard types and features without concern for the specifics of each remote database that the applications may encounter. Likewise, database driver implementors need only know how to attach to the core library. This makes RDB Connect modular.

RDB Connect allows your IBM iSeries (AS/400) to remotely access & share remote data from:

  • MySQL
  • Microsoft SQL Server
  • Access
  • Oracle
  • Postgre
  • DB2
  • and More!

We use RDB Connect in our current DBU database utility / file editor to allow users to access their remote data via the IBM i's DBU interface...it's proven!

RDB Connect Testimonials

Two Thumbs UP on RDB Connect!

"I installed the trial version of RDB Connect on Friday and am VERY pleased. Over the weekend I wrote several RPGLE programs using RDB Connect. Connections & transactions between our two systems are very quick. And the learning curve was minor. We are working on a Web based ordering system. We needed some way to be able to "talk" to the web server/sql server from an RPGLE program and RDB Connect has made it very easy."

Robert Stitzel

"We are using DBU database utility / file editor to access remote MSSQL databases.    IBM doesn't provide an easy way for the IBM i to be a client to a remote SQL database, but DBU database utility / file editor does!

Since a lot of the company's data resides on MS servers running MSSQL, we needed a way to examine and get that data into native, IBM i physical files. DBU database utility / file editor does both! "

"We love DBURDB! ProData has RDB for DBU database utility / file editor which allows you to do a DBU on the remote database, where RDB CONNECT allows you to connect to the remote database using a CL or RPG program. Plus, their support is world-class!"
